DPCW_1038 : Global Peace Education Conference

Since 2017, HWPL has been collaborating with education ministries and institutions to provide peace education to children and young adults. HWPL has been pouring in efforts to promote institutionalizing peace to ensure that peace takes firm roots.

In particular, the Global Peace Education Conference of the 9th Anniversary of the September 18th HWPL World Peace Summit held in Incheon, South Korea, served as an opportunity to discuss sustainable and effective means to spread a culture of peace and firmly establish peace.

To transit toward peace from today’s era smeared by war, what should we show and teach to the younger generation?

HWPL proposes the direction for peace education with peace-related materials that will help foster peace.

Peace education is a crucial process to institutionalize peace and help with its settlement.

That is why each government should be responsible for promoting the institutionalization of peace by implementing a system to effectively implement peace education.

The first part of the conference presented the direction in which the education sector should move forward to promote the institutionalization of peace.

International Day of Democracy 15 September

Stories from the UN System

The UN promotes good governance, monitors elections, supports the civil society to strengthen democratic institutions and accountability, ensures self-determination in decolonized countries, and assists in the drafting of new constitutions in post-conflict nations.

Read some stories about how the UN supports democracy.

◇ ◆ ◈ ◇ ◆ ◈

2023 Theme: Empowering the next generation

This year’s theme for the International Day of Democracy, “Empowering the next generation,” focuses on young people’s essential role in advancing democracy and ensuring that their voices are included in the decisions that have a profound impact on their world.

Young people are the current and future custodians of democracy

An engaged, well-educated electorate is at the heart of strong democratic societies. Creating an environment in which young people feel their voice counts is crucial.

Young people must navigate a world in which democracies are under threat from factors ranging from the proliferation of online mis- and disinformation, to rising populism, and the destabilizing effects of the climate crisis. It is important everyone is able to meaningfully participate in the decisions that affect their lives now, and in years to come.

Unresolved conflicts, the rising threat of climate change and financial turmoil pose a constant threat to democracies around the world.

“The walls are closing in on civic spaces,”

warns United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the International Day of Democracy.

In his message marking the day, the UN chief blames the current spread of mis- and disinformation that is “poisoning public discourse, polarizing communities, and eroding trust in institutions”.

Given the damaging effect that this flood of false information can have on young people, this year's International Day of Democracy is dedicated to

"Empowering the Next Generation"

by focusing on the critical role of children and youngsters in ensuring democracy “today and in the future.”

DPCW_1038:Paint for Peace

In May of this year, the Georgia branch of the International Peace Youth Group (IPYG) held the second “Paint for Peace” at the Atlanta Beltline in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. More than 300 people participated in the event, including heads of civil organizations, local merchants, and ordinary citizens.

The Atlanta Beltline is an urban renewal project that utilizes an old railroad track on the outskirts of the city of Atlanta.

The city is working on urban construction projects around this track to connect transportation and create residential districts and parks, aiming to reduce crime zones and improve the quality of life for its citizens.

On this day, IPYG selected a place in the Beltline and painted a mural to symbolize peace. The citizens put their handprints on it and signed or wrote messages of peace to signify their participation in the creation of peace. At the location where the mural was painted, various programs were held in conjunction with yoga and Tai Chi (chuan) dance for community harmony.

The heads of civil organizations who participated in the event expressed interest in joining HWPL’s peace education, and a local merchant sponsored snacks, saying that he wanted to participate in the work of peace.

During the event, several citizens showed interest in HWPL and IPYG’s peace activities and inquired about how to participate. One citizen said, “The peace work that HWPL does is very important. There should be more people involved in peace activities.”

Since 2019, in Atlanta, which is also one of the areas with the highest number of gun accidents in the United States, the IPYG Georgia branch has been working to create a culture of peace in the community by interacting with local youth through peace education, workshops, and volunteer activities.

International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism 21 August

Acts of terrorism propagating a wide-range of hateful ideologies continue to injure, harm and kill thousands of innocent people each year.

Despite international condemnation of terrorism, victims and survivors of terrorism often struggle to have their voices heard, their needs supported, and their rights upheld.

#UN #INTERNATIONAL_DAY #PEACEBUILDING

#PEACEWORLD #HWPL #DPCW_1038 #WARP_OFFICE

#NO_WAR

Victims often feel forgotten and neglected once the immediate aftermath of a terrorist attack fades, with profound consequences for them.

Few Member States have the resources or the capacity to fulfil the medium and long-term needs of victims of terrorism to enable them to fully recover, rehabilitate and re-integrate into society. Most victims can only recover and cope with their trauma through long-term multi-dimensional support, including physical, psychological, social and financial.

https://www.un.org/en/

Member States have the primary responsibility to support victims of terrorism and uphold their rights. The United Nations has an important role in supporting Member States to implement the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy by standing in solidarity and providing support to victims of terrorism; offering capacity building assistance; establishing networks; and offering support to civil society organizations, particularly victims' associations; and encouraging Member States to promote, protect and respect the rights of victims of terrorism.

The United Nations provides technical assistance and capacity-building to Member States and victims' associations in better addressing the needs of victims of terrorism.

World Humanitarian Day 19 August

World Humanitarian Day 2023

This year, our World Humanitarian Day campaign brings together the global humanitarian community to mark the twentieth anniversary of the attack on the UN headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq, and to show our unwavering commitment to deliver for the communities we serve, no matter who, no matter where and #NoMatterWhat.

Humanitarians have no other purpose than to save and protect lives and deliver the basic necessities of life, they stand shoulder to shoulder with the communities they serve and bring hope.

On 19 August, we come together to honour humanitarians around the world who strive to meet ever-growing global needs. No matter the danger or the hardship, humanitarians venture deep into disaster-stricken regions and on the front lines of conflict, strive to save and protect people in need.

International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples 9 August

Violations of the rights of the world's Indigenous Peoples have become a persistent problem, sometimes because of a historical burden from their colonization backgrounds and others because of the contrast with a constantly changing society.

In response to this problem, let’s remember every August 9 that Indigenous Peoples have the right to make their own decisions and carry them out meaningfully and culturally appropriate to them.

In this context of demand for self-determination, Indigenous youth are working as agents of change at the forefront of some of the most pressing crises facing humanity today.

For instance, Indigenous youth are harnessing cutting-edge technologies and developing new skills to offer solutions and contribute to a more sustainable, peaceful future for our people and planet.

But their future depends as well on the decisions that are made today. Their representation and participation in global efforts towards climate change mitigation, peacebuilding, and digital cooperation are crucial for the effective implementation of their rights as indigenous.

This International Day of Indigenous Peoples 2023, under the title of "Indigenous youth as agents of change for self-determination", revindicates the role that indigenous youth must occupy in decision-making while recognizing their dedicated efforts in climate action, the search for justice for their people, and the creation of an intergenerational connection that keeps their culture, traditions, and contributions alive.
