61 Pledges to Implement Peace Projects

In commemoration of the 9th anniversary of the HWPL September 18th World Peace Summit held from September 18th to the 20th, 61 discussions were held during the

 

“Roundtable on Conflict Resolution and the Spreading a Culture of Peace,” 

which took place over the course of three days. Participants from 45 countries in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe engaged in meetings that extended from morning to late in the night.

PRECIOUS LEGACY TO PASS DOWN TO FUTURE GENERATIONS: PEACE!

 

We will change the word "WAR" into "PEACE" in our daily lives.

 

We have an obligation to leave apeaceful world as a legacy to future generations.

The conference encompassed discussions on conflict resolution (3 topics), the peace activities (Legislate Project, LP) required by individual countries and regions (33 topics), the MOU and MOA agreements for the operation and collaboration of peace activities (10 topics), and the national support needed for the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) at the national level (15 topics). In total, 61 project goals were established, and a signing ceremony to implement these projects took place.

 

Haile Meskel, Head of the Social Capital Building Department of the Ministry of Peace in Ethiopia, expressed his commitment to activating peace culture in Ethiopia through the revitalization of HWPL’s LP activities, focusing on establishing a culture of peace and institutionalizing peace. He said, “It was great to communicate concrete plans to put our pre-discussed items into actions. I will do my best to bring the outcome next year.”

After three days of discussions, the DPCW Conference held on September 20th announced the results of the discussions. At the conference, a “Joint Statement on Conflict Resolution and Spreading a Culture of Peace” was publicly released, emphasizing cooperation and a shared commitment to realizing the DPCW and implementing peace activities. A total of 166 individuals signed the joint statement.

 

International Equal Pay Day 18 September

Equal pay for work of equal value

International Equal Pay Day, celebrated on 18 September, represents the longstanding efforts towards the achievement of equal pay for work of equal value. It further builds on the United Nations' commitment to human rights and against all forms of discrimination, including discrimination against women and girls.

 

Across all regions, women are paid less than men, with the gender pay gap estimated at around 20 per cent globally.

 

Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls continue to be held back owing to the persistence of historical and structural unequal power relations between women and men, poverty and inequalities and disadvantages in access to resources and opportunities that limit women’s and girls’ capabilities. Progress on narrowing that gap has been slow.

 

While equal pay for men and women has been widely endorsed, applying it in practice has been difficult.

In order to ensure that no one is left behind, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) address the need to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. Furthermore, the SDGs promote decent work and economic growth by seeking full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men, including for young people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for work of equal value. Mainstreaming of a gender perspective is crucial in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

 

Achieving equal pay is an important milestone for human rights and gender equality. It takes the effort of the entire world community and more work remains to be done. The United Nations, including UN Women and the International Labour Organization (ILO) invites Members states and civil society, women’s and community-based organizations and feminist groups, as well as businesses and workers’ and employers’ organizations, to promote equal pay for work of equal value and the economic empowerment of women and girls.

International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples 9 August

 Violations of the rights of the world's Indigenous Peoples have become a persistent problem, sometimes because of a historical burden from their colonization backgrounds and others because of the contrast with a constantly changing society.

 

In response to this problem, let’s remember every August 9 that Indigenous Peoples have the right to make their own decisions and carry them out meaningfully and culturally appropriate to them.

 

In this context of demand for self-determination, Indigenous youth are working as agents of change at the forefront of some of the most pressing crises facing humanity today.

 

For instance, Indigenous youth are harnessing cutting-edge technologies and developing new skills to offer solutions and contribute to a more sustainable, peaceful future for our people and planet.

 

But their future depends as well on the decisions that are made today. Their representation and participation in global efforts towards climate change mitigation, peacebuilding, and digital cooperation are crucial for the effective implementation of their rights as indigenous.

 

 

This International Day of Indigenous Peoples 2023, under the title of "Indigenous youth as agents of change for self-determination", revindicates the role that indigenous youth must occupy in decision-making while recognizing their dedicated efforts in climate action, the search for justice for their people, and the creation of an intergenerational connection that keeps their culture, traditions, and contributions alive.

International day : World Breastfeeding Week, 1-7 August [WHO]

Breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure child health and survival. However, contrary to WHO recommendations, fewer than half of infants under 6 months old are exclusively breastfed.

 

Breastmilk is the ideal food for infants. It is safe, clean and contains antibodies which help protect against many common childhood illnesses. Breastmilk provides all the energy and nutrients that the infant needs for the first months of life, and it continues to provide up to half or more of a child’s nutritional needs during the second half of the first year, and up to one third during the second year of life.

 

Breastfed children perform better on intelligence tests, are less likely to be overweight or obese and less prone to diabetes later in life. Women who breastfeed also have a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancers.

 

Inappropriate marketing of breast-milk substitutes continues to undermine efforts to improve breastfeeding rates and duration worldwide.

World Population Day 11 July

World Population Trends

It took hundreds of thousands of years for the world population to grow to 1 billion – then in just another 200 years or so, it grew sevenfold. In 2011, the global population reached the 7 billion mark, it stands at almost 7.9 billion in 2021, and it's expected to grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050, and 10.9 billion in 2100.

 

This dramatic growth has been driven largely by increasing numbers of people surviving to reproductive age, and has been accompanied by major changes in fertility rates, increasing urbanization and accelerating migration. These trends will have far-reaching implications for generations to come.

 

The recent past has seen enormous changes in fertility rates and life expectancy. In the early 1970s, women had on average 4.5 children each; by 2015, total fertility for the world had fallen to below 2.5 children per woman. Meanwhile, average global lifespans have risen, from 64.6 years in the early 1990s to  72.6 years in 2019.

 

In addition, the world is seeing high levels of urbanization and accelerating migration. 2007 was the first year in which more people lived in urban areas than in rural areas, and by 2050 about 66 per cent of the world population will be living in cities.

These megatrends have far-reaching implications.

 

They affect economic development, employment, income distribution, poverty and social protections. They also affect efforts to ensure universal access to health care, education, housing, sanitation, water, food and energy. To more sustainably address the needs of individuals, policymakers must understand how many people are living on the planet, where they are, how old they are, and how many people will come after them.

DPCW_1038 : May 3 World Press Freedom Day

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day, 158 people gathered to commemorate this important date. HWPL in collaboration with the Permanent Delegation of Suriname to UNESCO and the National Commission of the Democratic Republic of Congo for UNESCO organized a webinar to highlight the need for press freedom in today's society. This event aimed to propose solutions for improving the safety and working conditions of journalists with the cooperation between civil society, private sectors, and governments. For this, journalists, delegations to UNESCO, former ministers, and representatives of civil society were present.

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed May 3 as World Press Freedom Day. This proclamation marked the beginning of substantial progress for press freedom and freedom of expression around the world, with the proliferation of independent media in many countries and the rise of digital technologies allowing for the free flow of information online.

 

This year's celebration of the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day is a call to define press freedom, as well as independent, pluralistic, and diverse media, as a necessary condition for the enjoyment of all other human rights. This is because unreliable information that has caused racism and hatred has widely spread through the media during the global pandemic.

This commemoration was opened with congratulatory speeches from the co-host countries’ delegations. The media-related workers from Congo, Mali, and the Czech Republic gave topic presentations on the protection of press freedom and the protection of human rights through it and the discussions were followed among presenters and participants.

 

In his congratulatory speech, His Excellency Mr. Lazare LIEMA IBONGO-BOTIE recalled that UNESCO sensitizes Member States to the need to strengthen standards and policies that promote freedom of expression, press freedom, the safety of journalists, and the right to information. He also reminded governments of the need to respect their commitments to press freedom.

H.E. Mr. Yaya Sangaré said: "Healthy and independent journalism is vital to any democratic society. This profession comes from the right to have an opinion, to express it, to disseminate it, and to share it freely, as well as the right to seek information and ideas. This is a guarantee of transparency in the exercise of responsibilities in the conduct of public affairs, as well as in the resolution of issues of general interest. It is also what encourages full and complete participation in socio-political life and in the decision-making process, with full knowledge of the facts. This is why the practice of journalism must be secured, in terms of training, working conditions, and protection."

 

Ms. Severina Papis concluded by saying, "As a peace organization, HWPL hopes to build greater global support for press freedom and encourage journalists to continue their important work in promoting a peaceful and just world. Our organization will strive to work with communities in each country not only for this event but also for the freedom of the press and the respect for other human rights. Especially by activating the MAGP platform, we will try to strengthen a network of journalists and will try to protect numerous other human rights threatened by fake news and content of hate and discrimination.“

 

MAGP(Media Association for Global Peace) is an online-based peace platform that spreads the culture of peace and specializes in sharing various types of peace materials including peace news, and information about peace-related events worldwide. One of MAGP's key objectives is to ensure freedom of information and freedom of the press, as set forth in international agreements, including the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, UN resolutions, the Windhoek Declaration, UN resolutions, and the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) declared by HWPL.

Music of improvisation and collective creation

International Jazz Day raises awareness in the international community of the virtues of jazz as a force for peace, unity, dialogue and enhanced cooperation among people, as well as an educational tool. Many governments, civil society organizations, educational institutions, and private citizens currently engaged in the promotion of jazz music embrace the opportunity to foster greater appreciation, not only for the music, but also for the contribution it can make to building more inclusive societies.

 International Jazz Day has had extraordinary successes over the past decade, becoming the world’s largest annual celebration of jazz. It is a global movement, engaging people annually, on every continent, through education programs, performances, community outreach and media coverage.

INTERNATIONAL_DAY : English Language Day 23 April

Celebrating the English language at the UN

English Language Day at the UN is celebrated on 23 April, the date traditionally observed as both the birthday and date of death of William Shakespeare. As well as being the most famous playwright, who wrote in English, Shakespeare also had a huge impact on modern-day English.

 

Today, every one in four people in the world uses English. English is being used more and more as a way for two speakers with different first languages to communicate with each other.

 

At the United Nations, English is one of the two working languages, along with French.

 

The Day is the result of a 2010 initiative by the Department of Global Communications, establishing language days for each of the Organization's six official languages. The purpose of the UN's language days is to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity, as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages throughout the Organization.

 

Under the initiative, UN duty stations around the world celebrate six separate days, each dedicated to one of the Organization's six official languages.

DPCW_1038 : The Conference for the Rule of Law was Held

On January 11, the Conference for the Guarantee and Realization of Law was held by HWPL to commemorate Constitution Day in Mongolia. The conference aimed to discuss topics related to the rule of law and human rights in Mongolia.

 

The conference took place at Soyombo Hall in Tuushin Hotel, Mongolia, and it was attended by approximately 400 participants from diverse sectors – government officials including former Deputy Prime Minister and former Minister of Mongolia, educators, press, Buddhists, lawyers, and NGOs.

 

In the conference, the status of citizens’ awareness of and compliance with the rule of law and the domestic law in Mongolia was presented.

Emphasis was placed on fostering the culture of rule of law across all aspects of society including public and private sectors. Furthermore, the need to reinforce policies related to women’s human rights, constitutional freedoms, and citizen education on law was explained.
