First National Peace Convention to Establish Unity for Peace in the Philippines

The first National Peace Convention is set to take place on January 25, 2023 (Wednesday) at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). More than 1,000 participants are expected to attend from different sectors including lawmakers, university presidents and educators, youth and women leaders, media, religious leaders, and civil society organizations.

The said peace convention will commence with the theme, “Peace Builds One Nation, One Future – Peace is Here”, aiming to establish a roadmap towards the attainment of national unity through peace in consonance with the Marcos Administration’s agenda. Through this event, a resolution will be presented to President Bongbong Marcos for a possible declaration of National Peace Day – a special working holiday.

The event is organized and spearheaded by the Volunteer Individuals for Peace (VIP), a local peace organization chaired by Dr. Ronald Adamat, Commissioner of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). This event becomes international with the participation of a South Korea-based NGO, Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) chaired by Lee Man-hee who is a peace advocate and war veteran from South Korea. Through the partnership of VIP and CHED with HWPL, the introduction of peace education at the national level and collaboration of peace activities at the international level have been pursued.

📎

The 92-year-old HWPL Chairman will be coming to the Philippines in commemoration of the 9th Anniversary of the January 24 HWPL Peace Day. The Peace Day has been celebrated annually to commemorate a civilian-led peace agreement signed at General Santos City in 2014 to boost reconciliation among the local communities. A day before the convention, he is also set to attend and give a speech during the unveiling ceremony of the 11th peace monument in Plaza Asuncion, Malate, Manila.

The chairpersons of the two host organizations will give speeches during the first plenary session to present the milestones achieved for peace-building at the national and international levels, as well as their plans. Vice President Sara Duterte is also invited to speak at this session.

💒

In the afternoon, parallel sessions will take place for five sector groups: academe and youth, religious leaders, lawmakers and non-government organizations, media, and women leaders. In each session, there will be speeches followed by an open forum to produce a resolution from each sector group. These resolutions will be consolidated into one which will be presented to the President during the second plenary session.

🖋

Through this, a national peace framework with a holistic approach will be created for the adoption of peace-building and conflict prevention that will strengthen Philippines’ resolve to achieve national unity and sustainable development.

DPCW_1038 : The 1st HWPL Religious Youth Peace Camp in Zambia

The 1st HWPL Religious Youth Peace Camp in Zambia

Religione: Breaking Boundaries

On September 22, the first Zambian Religious Peace Camp, hosted by HWPL, was held at the Taqwa Islamic Center Trust located in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia under the theme of

“Religione: Breaking Boundaries.”

Religious leaders and youth organization members gathered in one place to resolve conflicts through religious and cultural exchanges.

https://www.hwpl.kr/language/en

✿❀✿

Around 140 people, including 7 leaders from Islam, Catholicism, and Hinduism who support religious peace, attended the camp, and experienced and learned the scriptures and culture of Islam.

The camp started with the greetings of each religious leader, then people were split into groups regardless of their religion. Then there were ice breaking and peace-related recreational activities, an introduction to Islamic religion, and a mosque tour. The participants were able to personally experience the Islamic religion and culture. There was also a program to broaden the understanding of religions, such as learning the history of world religions and finding solutions to the root causes of religious conflicts.

Swami Guneshananda, the Spiritual Director of Ramakrishna Vedanta Center in Lusaka, said in an interview, “Each and every religion is talking about peace, love, and cooperation. People in the world are fighting about the small things, as well as geographical and economical gain. Let us love each other, and to do that, we must become one.

WE ARE ONE.”

Another participant, Father Benjamin Itungabose, a Priest at Good Shepherd Kabawata Parish Church, shared, “For me, the most wonderful moment was when I met with my colleagues at the online WARP Office meeting. Also, what is more important is the warm welcome we received in this amazing mosque. Communication between the religious leaders was good, especially the host who taught us about Islam shared many things, including what Islam is. Spiritually, it is like a religion, because we all teach peace, mercy, love and harmony.”

Christian Nation Radio reporter Betty Kakoma said, “Today, I was very happy to see religious leaders and believers gathered to talk about peace and how to work together as one humanity. I learned that together, we can have a stronger voice. I learned a lot from other religions. These are some of the things that I can collaborate with HWPL as a journalist.”

Most religious scriptures all contain the values of peace, justice, human dignity, respect, and harmony. The Religious Peace Camp was more meaningful in that religious people can achieve harmony between religions by focusing on and understanding the values contained in different scriptures.

The Zambian Religious Peace Camp was hosted to promote the importance of religious harmony emphasized by HWPL to end the ongoing religious conflicts, eradicate discrimination and persecution by resolving misunderstandings and conflicts arising from ignorance between religions, and spread the culture of peace based on a correct understanding of each religion and ideology.

Aside from the Religious peace Camp, the HWPL WARP Office Meetings, a scriptural comparison discussion to achieve religious peace, have been hosted once a month in Zambia since 2015.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 17 October

2022 Theme: Dignity For All in Practice

The commitments we make together for social justice, peace, and the planet

Dignity for all in practice is the umbrella theme of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty for 2022-2023. The dignity of the human being is not only a fundamental right in itself but constitutes the basis of all other fundamental rights. Therefore, “Dignity” is not an abstract concept: it belongs to each and every one. Today, many people living in persistent poverty experience their dignity being denied and disrespected.

With the commitment to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure all people everywhere enjoy peace and prosperity, the 2030 Agenda again gestured toward the same promise established under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Yet, the current reality shows that 1.3 billion people still live in multidimensional poverty with almost half of them children and youth.

Inequalities of opportunities and income are sharply on the rise and, each year, the gap between the rich and poor gets even wider. In the past year, as millions struggle through the erosion of workers’ rights and job quality to make it to another day, corporate power and the wealth of the billionaire class have recorded an unprecedented rise.

Poverty and inequality are not inevitable. They are the result of deliberate decisions or inaction that disempower the poorest and marginalized in our societies and violate their fundamental rights. The silent and sustained violence of poverty – social exclusion, structural discrimination and disempowerment – makes it harder for people trapped in extreme poverty to escape and denies their humanity.

#WARP_OFFICE

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted this dynamic, exposing social protection system gaps and failures as well as structural inequalities and diverse forms of discrimination that deepen and perpetuate poverty. In addition to this, the climate emergency constitutes new violence against people living in poverty, as these communities are unduly burdened by more frequent occurrences of natural disasters and environmental degradation, leading to the destruction of their homes, crops and livelihoods.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty and the 30th anniversary of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This Day honors the millions of people suffering from poverty and their daily courage and recognizes the essential global solidarity and shared responsibility we hold to eradicate poverty and combat all forms of discrimination.

8th Anniversary of the September 18th HWPL World Peace Summit

󰀵

1. Introduction

The 8th Anniversary of the September 18th HWPL World Peace Summit will be held on 18 September 2022. The event commemorates the promises made for peace on 18 September 2014 by leaders in politics, religions, women's groups, youth groups, and journalism committed to working for world peace. Since then, annual commemorations are held every 18 September, where all parties share peace initiative plans, progress, and results.

#IPYG #IWPG #WARP_OFFICE

2. Background

Adding to violent conflicts, which have been a constant threat to safety for humanity, the pandemic has exacerbated the uncertainty for humanity's future.

The global community has yet to fully recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and still faces various threats such as the Russian-Ukraine conflict, increasing economic instability from supply chain disruptions and inflation, and unsuccessful attempts to address climate change. The situation poses a significant challenge to our chances for coexistence.

HWPL has proposed peace as an institution to resolve the above global threats. The main goal is to weave the values of peace into our social fabric, allowing mutual respect, harmony, cooperation, and co-prosperity to become part of our institutions as the norms and cultures of each society, domestic law, and international law. The principle of peace that enables this institutional peace is contained in the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW).

#DPCW_1038

#PEACE

The DPCW lays the foundation for the institutionalization of peace, a process of establishing peace within a community. The 10 articles and 38 clauses of the DPCW underscore conflict prevention and resolution, gradual reduction of armament and the transition to instruments for daily lives, mutual respect and conflict resolution of religious and ethnic groups, and spreading a culture of peace. The DPCW not only unambiguously states "what" needs to be done for peace as an institution but also "who" needs to do it. From international organizations to central and local governments, non-governmental organizations, and civic groups, all actors in the global community are set as the main players in the run for institutionalizing peace.

#PEACE_WORLD #NGO #HUMAN_RIGHTS

HWPL's vision for peace as an institution goes beyond temporary measures to cease conflict actions and pursues peace incorporated into laws, values, and cultures, which serve as a mode of behavior for all

individuals and groups. The world is witnessing daily lives being uprooted due to disease, war, climate, and poverty, which, in turn, undermine human dignity and expose many people to an environment where basic rights are not guaranteed. In response to this, HWPL conducted a campaign last year to build a foundation for human dignity in the foreground, in effect promoting human rights. The event will present HWPL projects on universal human rights and their achievements.

3. Details and Results

HWPL has been working with governments and civil society globally for the past year to promote sustainable development and institutionalization of peace in various fields. HWPL has carried out multiple projects in areas such as promoting human rights, protecting the weak, resolving conflicts peacefully, and spreading a culture of peace in order to establish a sustainable system that will maintain a common will for peace despite the crisis and changes in the global community. The event will cover the following topics.

• MOUs and MOAs with governments and IGOs for peace as an institution.

• Expansion of international discussions for judicial settlement of disputes and maintenance of peace

• Human rights webinars and media activities to highlight conflict and violence phenomena and raise public awareness of universal human rights.

80 Students Dressed in Many National Outfits Parade for Peace and the DPCW in the Philippines

The Philippines has a history of many conflicts and wars, which connects with the local’s consistent enthusiasm for peace showcased in a series of HWPL peace movements. 25 October, another peace event was held with some 200 students and their families at Bethel Knox School. The event offered participants a chance to think about peace-related values and taste Korean culture.

✉

To celebrate United Nations Day, 24 October, students of Bethel Knox paraded in a variety of costumes representing different cultures and nations. Paraders dressed in respective national dresses marched and chanted, “Spread the culture of peace,” the title of the 10th article of the DPCW, stirring air of hope amongst the audience for a world united with peace.

✎✎✎

The DPCW (Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War) has 38 clauses, which again form 10 articles, including articles like “Prohibition of the Threat or Use of Force” and “Friendly Relations and the Prohibition of Acts of Aggression.” The Declaration is repeatedly recognized as some of the most effective instruments which could realize what the United Nations stands for — peace and the cessation of wars.

Sarah Garduque, the principal of the school who planned the event, said, “The event had a lot of preparations to make, especially in planning the concept.” But one thing came first to her mind — the theme of HWPL is the Peace and Unity brought by DPCW. It turned out to be “a great idea,” she remarked.

✈

After the parade, students presented dance performances to celebrate “a day of marching toward peace,” followed by a multicultural feast with international cuisines including a boodle fight, a traditional Filipino meal.

Bethel Knox students recently started taking the HWPL Peace Education program, and their faces gleamed with excitement and anticipation for a future of peace throughout the event. Bethel Knox is offering the HWPL Peace Education program to inspire students with the spirit of peace and nurture future peace activists. Peace Education is set to serve as a building block to bring people of diverse ethnicities and cultures together to call for peace. Students who finish the Peace Education courses will become the beacon of a brighter and more peaceful future.

The demand of travel is exlpoding due to Corona 19 endemic, and the travel industry’s visit to Korea is increasing. The expectations for overseas travel have been amplified as the COVID-19 incident, which began in February 2020, has increased the thirst of travelers who couldn’t travel abroad due to the closure of the sky. Travel demand is also expected to be huge. According to the survey of CICI, the thing people want to do the most is ‘traveling abroad’ when the COVID-19 becomes stable.

The 2022 Lecture Series on Disarmament in Germany voices

The 2022 Lecture Series on Disarmament in Germany voices the importance of citizen participation in disarmament activities

On April 19, 2022, the first lecture of the 2022 Lecture Series on Disarmament was held in Germany under the theme of ‘The Importance of Disarmament and Current World Situation’. Starting with this lecture, four sessions (April 19, May 3, May 17, May 31) were held over 6 weeks with a total attendance of 165 people, including 6 speakers.

#DPCW_1038 #PEACE_WORLD #WARP_OFFICE

Disarmament is closely related to various social issues that are currently taking place, and is one of the important factors in achieving world peace. HWPL Frankfurt Branch volunteers in Germany conducted over 20 interviews with various disarmament experts over the past year. And the experts who were interviewed emphasized the importance of improving the awareness and participation of young people in disarmament activities in Germany. Thus, the lecture series has been planned in response to these needs.

The four main themes of the session were,

‘Importance of disarmament and the current world situation’,

‘Relevance of global issues and armament’,

‘The current state of disarmament in Germany’,

and

‘The need for cooperation between the government and youth for disarmament.’

After the lecture, Q&A and discussions were held freely with the citizens in attendance on topics related to the lecture.

Dr. Matin Baraki, a lecturer at the University of Marburg who presented on the topic of relevance of global issues and armament, said during his lecture, “The importance of HWPL’s peace activities is increasing due to the current crisis in Ukraine, and I think it is our role for everyone to participate in disarmament and international activities.”

Citizens who attended the lecture commented, “Before listening to the lecture, I had no idea how much money was spent just maintaining the military and how much environmental pollution was caused by this”, and “I now can understand the role of young people for disarmament, and I hope that there will be many more of these lectures so that more people will know the importance of disarmament.”

HWPL is planning another lecture series on disarmament in the second half of the year to let more citizens recognize the importance of disarmament. With the participation of many citizens, it is hoped that active disarmament and peace activities will continue in Europe and around the world, starting from Germany.
