One Voice that Tells the Answer to Peace

Communication and Cooperation for the Realization of the World of Peace

The handwritten peace letters, as part of the Peace Letter Campaign, promote peace awareness among citizens and highlight the important role that civil society plays as an active actor in the peacebuilding process.

This campaign also strongly urges for support and implementation, at both the national and international levels, of a legal mechanism to ensure and maintain peace.

In this way,

campaign activities are being conducted based on continuous communication and cooperation between civil society and the government with the purpose of implementing the international law for peace.

My parliament, my planet, our future! A compilation

Parliaments and parliamentary organizations played an active role throughout the negotiations on the post-2015 development framework, advocating strongly, for instance, for the inclusion of SDGs related to democratic governance.

Goal 13 of the Sustainable Development Goals is dedicated to taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Parliaments for the Planet

Climate action begins at home. Parliaments and those who work in them can take concrete steps to reduce their carbon footprint, both as institutions and individuals. By adopting greener policies and embracing a culture of sustainability, parliaments and parliamentarians can help address the climate crisis and pave the way for stronger climate action.

Climate change is killing people and destroying lives, development, peace and security all over the world.

The IPU helps parliaments make progress on the Paris Agreement as well as other climate treaties, accelerate decarbonization and reduce the carbon footprint within parliaments themselves through its research, tools and meetings.

As a first step, they can decarbonize their place of work by putting in place the IPU’s 10 actions for greener parliaments (and those who work in them).

International Day of Cooperatives 1 July

 Brief History

The earliest record of a co-operative comes from Scotland in March 14 1761. In 1844 a group of 28 artisans working in the cotton mills in north of England established the first modern co-operative business.

Cooperatives help to move forward the UN 2030 Agenda and make SDGs a reality

On 1 July, the cooperative movement will celebrate the 2023 International Day of Cooperatives. United by the slogan Cooperatives for sustainable development, we will show how the cooperative way of working, inspired by the cooperative values and principles, has the accomplishment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of its DNA.

In September 2023, the international community will mark the mid-point in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and seek ways to accelerate progress in the SDGs. It is thus a real key moment to demonstrate the contribution of cooperatives in advancing the achievement of the SDGs.

Being one of the world’s oldest and largest business networks, the cooperative movement was the first group of enterprises worldwide to endorse the SDGs and be recognised as a partner in achieving these goals.

Day of the Seafarer 2023

This year, once again, the annual Day of the Seafarer (DotS) will be celebrated on 25 June.

🐬

2023 Seafarers, MARPOL and the marine environment

For 2023, the campaign will look at seafarers' contribution to protecting the marine environment, in line with the World Maritime theme “MARPOL at 50 Our commitment goes on”.

Seafarers spend a great deal of time at sea and are a big part of the solution when it comes to protecting the marine environment.

🐳

As part of the campaign, we will be asking seafarers to share a picture of the marine environment surrounding them while at sea, highlighting that the marine environment is worth protecting.

International Day for Women in Diplomacy 24 June

Why women matter in diplomacy

Women have been playing a crucial role in global governance since the drafting and signing of the United Nations Charter in 1945. Women and girls represent half of the world’s population and, therefore, also half of its potential. Women bring immense benefits to diplomacy. Their leadership styles, expertise and priorities broaden the scope of issues under consideration and the quality of outcomes.

#WOMEN

Research shows that when women serve in cabinets and parliaments, they pass laws and policies that are better for ordinary people, the environment and social cohesion. Advancing measures to increase women’s participation in peace and political processes is vital to achieving women’s de facto equality in the context of entrenched discrimination.

#UN #PEACE #INTERNATIONAL_DAY

Out of the 193 Member States of the United Nations, only 34 women serve as elected Heads of State or Government. Whilst progress has been made in many countries, the global proportion of women in other levels of political office worldwide still has far to go: 21% of the world’s ministers, 26% of national parliamentarians, and 34% of elected seats of local government. According to a new UN report, at the current pace of progress, equal representation in parliament will not be achieved until 2062.

#PEACE_WORLD

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the world’s largest yearly meeting of world leaders. While the UNGA has been the setting for several historic moments for gender equality, much has yet to be achieved regarding women’s representation and participation. Just four women have been elected President of the UN General Assembly in its 77 years.

#UNGA

The 15-member UN Security Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. While women currently represent slightly over a third of the Security Council's members far higher than the average it is still far from enough. Explore the participation of women at the Security Council.

United Nations Public Service Day 23 June

Origin

On 20 December 2002, the General Assembly designated 23 June as Public Service Day by adopting resolution 57/277.

To bolster recognition of the Day and the value of public service, the United Nations established the UN Public Service Awards (UNPSA) programme in 2003, which was reviewed in 2016 to align with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The United Nations Public Service Forum is a global event that focuses on capacity development in public governance. Each year UN DESA organizes the Forum with a host country, using the event to host capacity-development workshops, the UN Public Service Awards ceremony and a Ministerial Roundtable.

Public institutions for the Sustainable Development Goals

Effective, accountable and inclusive institutions are essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is recognized by SDG 16 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Agenda also recognized that governments have the primary responsibility for implementing the SDGs and ensuring follow-up and review over the coming 15 years, at the national, regional and global levels. One of the first steps governments take to implement the Agenda is often to shape the institutional arrangements for steering the implementation of the SDGs and reviewing progress.

#UN #INTERNATIONAL_DAY #HWPL #IPYG #SDG #AGENDA #DPCW_1038

Public administration - the cornerstone of governments' work-plays an essential and critical role in improving people’s lives. Reinventing public administration is a positive and necessary way forward. Without public administration modernization and transformation to adapt to today’s needs, realizing a better future for all will be impossible. Where capable administrations are lacking, governments are incapacitated; and where governments are incapacitated, sustainable development falls short.

DPCW_1038 : Peace Monuments Unveiled to Commemorate Decade-Long Peace Movement

International peace organization named Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) celebrated the 10th Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of World Peace through a series of events across 59 countries including the Philippines for a whole month. The latest of which is the unveiling ceremony of peace monuments in Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT) on June 2, 2023.

In attendance during the unveiling was Dr. Ronald L. Adamat, Commissioner of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and founding chairman of Volunteer Individuals for Peace (VIP). The peace monuments bear the logos of ASCOT, HWPL and VIP to serve as a reminder of their shared commitment for peacebuilding especially through education.

Dr. Adamat said, “This is another milestone in our initiative for the promotion of the culture of peace. I am glad to have this unveiled because this is a sacred place, which I call a Peace Shrine and it adds to the serenity of the place [Ermita Hill]. We’ll continue to do this among the state universities and colleges in the country.”

To date, this is the 10th of its kind erected within a campus, among the 16 HWPL peace monuments all over the country.

Moreover, he announced that the Commission en Banc has recently approved the establishment of peace corners in the libraries of all higher educational institutions, where peace-related reference materials will be accessible to all students and faculty members.

The Peace Walk was also held by partner schools and communities particularly in Lucban, Cotabato City, and Pila and Siniloan, Laguna as an expression of support for HWPL’s 10th Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of World Peace and Peace Walk.

Moreover, 5,000 participants gathered at the Peace Gate of Seoul Olympic Park in South Korea where “The Declaration of World Peace” was announced on May 25, 2013. The declaration includes a message that emphasizes the role of global citizens, including the presidents of each country, in working toward peace. Three years after, HWPL proclaimed the “Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War” (DPCW) with 10 articles and 38 clauses, which was drafted with the participation of international law experts from 15 countries.

During the events, HWPL established peace booths to boost the signature campaign for the DPCW. By the end of the year, HWPL aims to garner 10 million signatures from individuals who support the legalization of the DPCW, in order to submit it to the United Nations to be implemented as international law.

International Day for Countering Hate Speech, 18 June

Why tackle hate speech?

Since the spread of hateful rhetoric can be an early warning of violence including atrocity crimes limiting hate speech could contribute to mitigating its impact.

The Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide

To prevent atrocity crimes, it is critically important to understand their root causes. Crimes, such as genocide and crimes against humanity, are not spontaneous acts.

They develop as a process over time, during which it may be possible to identify warning signs, including hate speech targeting specific groups. Therefore, the Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide is the focal point for the implementation of the UN Strategy on Hate Speech.

As history has shown, genocide and mass atrocities begin with words of hate. This underscores our collective responsibility to address hate speech today to prevent potential harm tomorrow. But countering hate speech effectively requires a holistic approach that goes beyond legislation. It must also focus on prevention.

The United Nations Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech emphasizes the transformative power of education as a tool to address this phenomenon’s root causes and drivers. It seeks to promote peaceful, inclusive and just societies for all, in line with the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals.

World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, 17 June

Discover the key findings of this study about the nature of gender inequalities regarding land tenure, access to technologies and resources for sustainable land management, women’s involvement in decision-making, and the numerous difficulties caused by drought and land degradation in the daily lives of women and girls.

Her land. Her rights.

Gender inequality is real in terms of land and drought

Droughts are among the greatest threats to sustainable development, especially in developing countries, but increasingly so in developed nations too. In fact, forecasts estimate that by 2050 droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world’s population.

The number and duration of droughts has increased by 29 percent since 2000, as compared to the two previous decades (WMO 2021). When more than 2.3 billion people already face water stress, this is a huge problem.

Women hold a vital stake in the health of the land, yet they often don't have control over it.

In all parts of the world, women face significant barriers in securing land rights, limiting their ability to thrive and prosper.

In many regions, they remain subject to discriminatory laws and practices that impede their right to inherit and access to services and resources.

And when land becomes degraded and water is scarce, womenare often the worst affected.

#UN #HWPL #PEACE #DRAUGHT #WOMEN #HUMAN_RIGHTS

This year, the theme of the International Day Against Desertification, and Drought "Her land. Her rights", emphasizes that investing in women’s equal access to land and associated assets is a direct investment in their future and the future of humanity. It's time for women and girls to be at the forefront of global land restoration and drought resilience efforts.
