HWPL International Religious Peace Academy (IRPA)

As part of the newly launched HWPL International Religious Peace Academy (IRPA), online lectures were held over four Saturdays from July 8th to 29th, 2023. The IRPA showcased lectures delivered by prominent religious leaders from Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Sikhism, based on their respective religious scriptures. A total of 1,388 religious leaders from 108 countries attended the lecture series.

#WARP_OFFICE

📕Since 2014, HWPL has operated the World Alliance of Religions’ Peace (WARP) Offices for inter-religious comparative scriptural discussions, Religious Youth Peace Camps for religious and cultural exchange, and Open Dialogues with Religious Leaders for intra-faith discussions around the world. To expand on the work for peace among religions, HWPL has initiated the HWPL International Religious Peace Academy (IRPA) platform where people can explore beyond a basic understanding of each religion through scripture-based lectures by various religious leaders.

#HWPL

📚Prominent religious leaders are invited to present lectures on various topics in the Religious Peace Academy, and participating religious leaders can choose and attend lectures on scriptures from religions other than their own.

#DPCW_1038

📘Last July, 15-minute long religious lectures on the same topics were presented in the first and second weeks of the RPA lecture series. This was followed by hour-long in-depth lectures in the third and fourth weeks, where participants chose the religious lectures of their choice.

📔The first week of the RPA was held with the topic of ‘Prophecy and Fulfillment’, and the second week under the theme of ‘Signs of the End Times and a New Era’. Detailed information about the lectures may be found at the official website (http://rpa.hwpl.kr/), such as introductions to the lecturers and lecture videos.

#IPYG #IWPG #PEACE

📕HWPL will continue to organize and operate the International Religious Peace Academy lectures so that religion may reclaim its original role and purpose of love and understanding, and not be used as a tool for conflict.

DPCW_1038:Paint for Peace

In May of this year, the Georgia branch of the International Peace Youth Group (IPYG) held the second “Paint for Peace” at the Atlanta Beltline in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. More than 300 people participated in the event, including heads of civil organizations, local merchants, and ordinary citizens.

The Atlanta Beltline is an urban renewal project that utilizes an old railroad track on the outskirts of the city of Atlanta.

The city is working on urban construction projects around this track to connect transportation and create residential districts and parks, aiming to reduce crime zones and improve the quality of life for its citizens.

On this day, IPYG selected a place in the Beltline and painted a mural to symbolize peace. The citizens put their handprints on it and signed or wrote messages of peace to signify their participation in the creation of peace. At the location where the mural was painted, various programs were held in conjunction with yoga and Tai Chi (chuan) dance for community harmony.

The heads of civil organizations who participated in the event expressed interest in joining HWPL’s peace education, and a local merchant sponsored snacks, saying that he wanted to participate in the work of peace.

During the event, several citizens showed interest in HWPL and IPYG’s peace activities and inquired about how to participate. One citizen said, “The peace work that HWPL does is very important. There should be more people involved in peace activities.”

Since 2019, in Atlanta, which is also one of the areas with the highest number of gun accidents in the United States, the IPYG Georgia branch has been working to create a culture of peace in the community by interacting with local youth through peace education, workshops, and volunteer activities.

International Day for People of African Descent 31 August

People of African Descent (2015-2024)

The International Decade aims to celebrate the important contributions of people of African descent worldwide, advance social justice and inclusion policies, eradicate racism and intolerance, promote human rights, and assist in creating better, more prosperous communities, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals spearheaded by the United Nations.

I urge States to take concrete steps, with the full participation of people of African descent and their communities, to tackle old and new forms of racial discrimination; and to dismantle entrenched structural and institutional racism."

~UN Secretary-General António Guterres

Honouring the contributions of the African diaspora

The International Day for People of African Descent will be celebrated for the first time on 31 August 2021. Through this Observance the United Nations aims to promote the extraordinary contributions of the African diaspora around the world and to eliminate all forms of discrimination against people of African descent.

International days reflect the values that society shares. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights and have the potential to contribute constructively to the development and well-being of their societies. Any doctrine of racial superiority is scientifically false, morally condemnable, socially unjust, and dangerous and must be rejected, together with theories that attempt to determine the existence of separate human races.

The United Nations strongly condemns the continuing violent practices and excessive use of force by law enforcement agencies against Africans and people of African descent and condemns structural racism in criminal justice systems around the world. The Organization further acknowledges the Transatlantic Slave Trade as one of the darkest chapters in our human history and upholds human dignity and equality for the victims of slavery, the slave trade and colonialism, in particular people of African descent in the African diaspora.

International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism 21 August

Acts of terrorism propagating a wide-range of hateful ideologies continue to injure, harm and kill thousands of innocent people each year.

Despite international condemnation of terrorism, victims and survivors of terrorism often struggle to have their voices heard, their needs supported, and their rights upheld.

#UN #INTERNATIONAL_DAY #PEACEBUILDING

#PEACEWORLD #HWPL #DPCW_1038 #WARP_OFFICE

#NO_WAR

Victims often feel forgotten and neglected once the immediate aftermath of a terrorist attack fades, with profound consequences for them.

Few Member States have the resources or the capacity to fulfil the medium and long-term needs of victims of terrorism to enable them to fully recover, rehabilitate and re-integrate into society. Most victims can only recover and cope with their trauma through long-term multi-dimensional support, including physical, psychological, social and financial.

https://www.un.org/en/

Member States have the primary responsibility to support victims of terrorism and uphold their rights. The United Nations has an important role in supporting Member States to implement the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy by standing in solidarity and providing support to victims of terrorism; offering capacity building assistance; establishing networks; and offering support to civil society organizations, particularly victims' associations; and encouraging Member States to promote, protect and respect the rights of victims of terrorism.

The United Nations provides technical assistance and capacity-building to Member States and victims' associations in better addressing the needs of victims of terrorism.
