 WARP OFFICE

The World Alliance of Religions’ Peace (WARP) Office Meetings are HWPL’s worldwide peace dialogue series on interfaith relations and scriptural texts. These meetings aim to prevent the conflicts caused by religious misunderstandings and bring forth peace through gaining a deeper understanding of the standards and teachings of each religion, as well as the concept of peace spoken about in each scripture.

The Peace Office Meetings have become a global movement, and an increasing number of influential religious leaders are now going beyond their traditional roles and work as messengers of peace. This innovative initiative has stirred up discussions among leaders of various faiths and has increased peaceful interactions between them. It has shown itself to be an effective tool for breaking down the walls between religions and achieving our common goal: peace.

The Peace Office Meetings are becoming a way to create a bridge between religions in all areas of the globe.

DPCW_1038 : Get Together

On 13 November, the second seminar of

“Get Together”,

co-hosted by the IPYG and House of Culture (Haus der Kulture) in Switzerland, was held in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. This seminar’s theme was “Embracement of Refugees and Peaceful Coexistence”.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), there were a total of 82.4 million refugees worldwide as of the end of 2020, which is an increase of about 2.9 million from the end of 2019. The number of refugees that is reaching a new record every year is now accounting for about 1% of the world’s population. Along with the rapidly increasing number of refugees, refugee-related topics are rising as a major issue in the international community.

For example, in Switzerland, where the event was held, it is estimated that about 115,000 refugees are living within the country as of the end of 2020 (UNHCR, Global Trend - Forced Displacement in 2020). The IPYG and Switzerland’s House of Culture have been conducting seminars since last September for peaceful coexistence between the native people and refugees, protection of refugees’ human rights, and cooperation to build the foundation for a sustainable future for refugees, etc. The members of House of Culture, local residents, and immigrants living in Switzerland have been attending these events.

Also, at this event, there was time to discuss methods of peaceful coexistence between citizens and refugees with the topics of “respect for diversity” and “value of life”, which are core topics of HWPL’s Peace Education. Through the discussion, participants learned about each other’s differences through dialogue and agreed to live in understanding and promised to have time for dialogue on a regular basis.

After the discussion, the event continued in a warm atmosphere through a party with refreshments and beauty care cultural activities to build close relationships.

The attendees of this event who had left their home countries and are settling in Switzerland especially expressed their gratitude and thought highly of the intent of this event, in which people with different languages, cultures, and backgrounds gathered in one place to understand each other and seek methods to coexist.

One attendee said, “I like the event a lot, especially that the organizers took time for me and cared for me, and I had a chance to be able to share the story of how I had to flee from home country and the pain I went through. I’m looking forward to the next event.”

Another attendee said, “I enjoyed the atmosphere and felt comfortable, and the speech reminded me of a poem I like about a garden only being beautiful because it’s made up of different flowers and plants. Because I know the feeling of being discriminated and deeply wish for a peaceful world, the speech felt very thoughtful. I’m interested in becoming an IPYG member.”

The “Get Together” seminar will continue bimonthly with the House of Culture in Switzerland.

DPCW_1038 : Czech Leisure Center Peace Education Seminar

On October 16, a peace education seminar was held at the Leisure Center in Ivančice, Czech Republic. The Czech Republic provides compulsory education of nine grades, and most schools give an opportunity to students to advance through grades by way of an evaluation system. Also, they have a system where students can retake a course on the subject that they received the lowest credit on during the semester. For this, a standardized educational environment has been created for moving up grades, and students are also immersed in studies focused on grade advancement. Therefore, apart from education that deals only with knowledge, most schools are striving to provide students with various learning and experiences through after-school classes.

This peace education seminar was arranged with the need for education on the personality of students in addition to their studies and was held for teachers who conduct after-school classes. HWPL first introduced the HWPL peace education and explained the necessity of peace education. Then after answering questions about peace education, teachers had time to discuss and present ideas on how to apply peace education into their lessons.

The teachers who attended the seminar talked about the conflicts that occur when people gather and live together, and they recalled again that there are various conflicts in life. In addition, they agreed that students should have the right personality to quell such conflicts and live together.

The Director of Leisure Center in Ivančice, Jana Heřmanová who hosted this seminar said, “I have written an essay with the topic: ‘Let people live in peace,’ but we did not move much from that time. Nevertheless, I believe that now when the focus is given to interpersonal development and lifelong learning, it will be moving. When it says ‘peace,’ it is not only about war and crimes, but also about us, people; how we behave to each other, what beliefs we have, understanding, love, how we act to another, and what are our attitudes. I believe that thanks to Peace Education, the awareness of what conflicts are, how to solve it and prevent it will be changed. The hope is we learn to communicate together, solve problems, and think about what society we will have and how we want to live in this world.”

The Director of Leisure Center in Hustopeče, Petr Fridrich said, “Peace Education is the root that must be in every individual. It can be applied in daily life, in every activity with students, any camp, anywhere where we can bring these topics. I think it is essential. We know that somewhere here are those topics, but we need to materialize so everyone can find what is necessary to him or herself and also for others because we are not on this planet alone.”

The Director of Children and Youth Center in Kuřim, Jiří Hejduk said, "Everyone would look forward to school, children would like to go there, there would be no bullying. The work of teachers would change, their motivation and also the motivation of children, and also education would change.”

The teachers plan to participate in HWPL Peace Educator’s Training Education for them to teach peace education in the future so that a culture of peace can be established in the Czech Republic.

Drawing peace murals that transcend religion

Drawing peace murals that transcend religion

Religious leaders and youth drew a peace mural at a temple located in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul for nine days on 27 August to 4 September 2021. The religious leaders have been actively participating in various peace culture activities such as scripture comparison discussions through the HWPL WARP Offices and religious peace camps.

The peace mural activity was planned to raise awareness of the importance of peace to neighbors and communities and to establish a culture of peace. Leaders from various religions including Ven. Seonjin, abbot of SunGuk Temple; Mr. Jongun Kim, Sundosa of Cheondogyo; the manager of Pocheon mosque; and the manager of Sikhism in Korea came together to show their determination to transcend religion and achieve peace to leave as an inheritance to the future generations.

Mr. Jongun Kim, the Sundosa of Cheondogyo said that “There are different races, but we are all sons and daughters of Hanwoolnim. It is just the beginning, and I believe that heaven and nirvana will come to this earth if humanity realizes that we are all one family. Peace cannot be achieved with words alone. Peace will come when we change people’s hearts.”

MD Hafije, the manager of Pocheon mosque emphasized the importance of peace activities by stating, “If we do the work of peace together, people’s thoughts will change and the world will become a world without conflicts and wars.”

In addition, Ven. Seonjin, abbot of SunGuk Temple, showed his determination for peace by saying, “There would be nothing better than the world finding hope through us coming together joyfully to find the truth. I have already participated in this peace activity for several years, and I believe that people will come to understand the true value of this work as more time passes. I would like to ask you to make an effort to achieve world peace by participating in HWPL’s peace initiatives instead of losing courage and hope.”

Yoo Yeong-ju, the Chief Director of Eastern Seoul and Gyeonggi branch began by saying “I am truly thankful that many religious leaders and our family members of peace who love peace came together as one to complete our first peace mural” and expressed his hope to expand peace initiatives to achieve peace together.

The peace mural drawing led to a religious peace camp hosted by members in Korea and abroad. Religious leaders overseas who were inspired by HWPL’s activities for peace despite the Covid-19 pandemic are working hard to conduct practical peace activities for communities and neighborhoods and establish a culture of peace, transcending religion.

DPCW_1038 : Peace Culture Education based on the DPCW for Citizens

Peace Culture Education based on the DPCW for Citizens

Peace Culture Education based on the DPCW for Citizens has been held in India and Bangladesh since last July with the participation of graduates from Bangladesh's Empowerment through Law of the Common People (ELCOP), an NGO, who completed the DPCW Handbook Discussion Project earlier this year, and the students from the University of Dhaka, Department of Peace and Conflict Studies. This educational program is expected to continue in 2022 after completing the second class related to “Peace Culture Education based on the DPCW for Citizens: DPCW Article 2” by December.Peace Culture Education based on the DPCW for Citizens is a project that educates citizens so that they can easily understand the 10 Articles and 38 Clauses of the DPCW. The educational program was created with animation and video lectures so that even those who do not know the law in detail can easily understand the DPCW. Since the lecture videos explain the articles of the DPCW in detail through various examples, it is expected that the DPCW will be delivered in an easy and familiar way to the citizens.

🎁

The students who participated in the Peace Culture Education based on the DPCW for Citizens said that after watching the DPCW animation video, they understood the DPCW more easily than seeing it as a text (legal document). In addition, they said that they hope that the DPCW will be legislated as an international law while seeing a happy future in which citizens make efforts (to achieve peace), and peace is realized through peace education in the midst of conflicts such as wars and human rights violations occurring around the world. They also said that they were able to simply grasp the core of the DPCW content through the video lectures of the Peace Culture Education based on the DPCW for Citizens about each article of the DPCW. The contents that consist of the situation of each country helped them understand the DPCW in depth. Above all, they were able to understand the current situation of the world and realized the importance of the relationship between the DPCW and peace.

*****

Unlike this education conducted in English, in 2022, students participating in the DPCW Peace Culture Education based on the DPCW for Citizens will give lectures to citizens of their own countries in their native language. The love of Bangladeshis for their mother tongue is so extraordinary that UNESCO designated International Mother Language Day in 1999 to commemorate the struggles of Bangladeshis to find their mother tongue. Therefore, it will be particularly significant that the DPCW Peace Culture Education based on the DPCW for Citizens will be conducted through native speakers in their native language.

🌹

One of the lecturers, Ms. Mahabuba Islam Meem, a student at the University of Dhaka, Department of Peace and Conflict Studies, expressed her ambition as a lecturer saying that she hopes that many people will become messengers of the culture of peace after being inspired by her lectures and that many women would participate and have the conviction that “Peace is possible.”

🦋

Meanwhile, prior to this DPCW Peace Culture Education based on the DPCW for Citizens, HWPL Western Busan & Gyeongnam conducted the DPCW Handbook Discussion Project for six months from the end of last year to the beginning of this year for lawyers and law students in India and Bangladesh. Afterwards, the results of the project were produced in a booklet, delivered to high-level officials in each country, and promoted. In the midst of this, the DPCW Citizens Peace Culture Education was planned and conducted to inform the citizens of the importance of DPCW and peace.
