International Universal Health Coverage Day, 12 December

It is time to get progress towards health for all back on track.

The United Nations High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage, held on 21 September 2023, reaffirmed that healthy people are the foundation of healthy societies and economies, and that UHC is central to achieving all of the Sustainable Development Goals.

And yet:

Half of the world’s population does not have access to essential health services.

An estimated 2 billion people face financial hardship due to out-of-pocket health expenses, including 344 million people living in extreme poverty.

Since the launch of the SDGs in 2015 even before the COVID-19 pandemic the expansion of health service coverage had stalled and financial protection had deteriorated.

The pandemic has set countries further back in their journey towards universal health coverage. It has also showed why UHC is so important.

International Day : Human Rights Day 10 December

2023 Theme: Freedom, Equality and Justice for All

In the decades since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948, human rights have become more recognised and more guaranteed across the globe.

The UDHR has since served as the foundation for an expanding system of human rights protection that today focuses also on vulnerable groups such as persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and migrants.

However, the promise of the UDHR, of dignity and equality in rights, has been under a sustained assault in recent years.

As the world faces challenges new and ongoing pandemics, conflicts, exploding inequalities, morally bankrupt global financial system, racism, climate change the values, and rights enshrined in the UDHR provide guideposts for our collective actions that do not leave anyone behind.

The year-long Human Rights 75 initiative seeks to shift the needle of understanding and action towards greater knowledge of the universality of the UDHR and the activism associated with it.

DPCW_1038 : United Generations Campaign

Intergenerational solidarity, a chance to grow together!

On October 7, 2023, the HWPL volunteering team conducted a campaign to raise awareness on the isolation faced by elderly people and to promote the importance of an intergenerational link.

This campaign was held at Place de la Bastille in Paris, France.

This event entitled

“United Generations Campaign : Intergenerational solidarity, a chance to grow together !”

was held during the Blue Week (national week for pensioners and the elderly) to commemorate UN International Day for Older Persons.

HWPL France Branch has been developing the United Generations initiative by conducting activities to foster dialogue, experience sharing, and participate in activities between different generations for a better understanding of and care between people from different ages and backgrounds. In 2023, HWPL youth volunteers have conducted more than 7 activities with young volunteers in 4 different retirement houses.

Through the campaign, about 80 citizens could experience various booth activities. They participated in the photo exhibition about HWPL activities in retirement houses and wrote 56 letters to isolated elderly people.

Participants complimented these HWPL volunteering activities and 30 people decided to join the organization by becoming members of HWPL

One of the participants said, “This initiative reminds me when I got involved in volunteering when I was a student. I think the message of the campaign is important because we’re so caught up in the routine of our daily lives and we often forget to be human.

✍️

Also, we forget that there are elderly people who are isolated and would like to receive even a little attention. Moreover, I think it’s smart to raise awareness of peace, by tackling an issue that doesn’t seem related to peace at first glance, but it draws attention to a vulnerable group and then raises awareness of the greater cause which is peace.”

💚💚💚

The letters collected through this campaign will be distributed to elderly people with no close relatives or who can’t often spend time with their family.

To combat the isolation and develop this intergenerational link, the elderly people will also have the opportunity to reply to the letters.

DPCW_1038 : Global Peace Education Conference

Since 2017, HWPL has been collaborating with education ministries and institutions to provide peace education to children and young adults. HWPL has been pouring in efforts to promote institutionalizing peace to ensure that peace takes firm roots.

In particular, the Global Peace Education Conference of the 9th Anniversary of the September 18th HWPL World Peace Summit held in Incheon, South Korea, served as an opportunity to discuss sustainable and effective means to spread a culture of peace and firmly establish peace.

To transit toward peace from today’s era smeared by war, what should we show and teach to the younger generation?

HWPL proposes the direction for peace education with peace-related materials that will help foster peace.

Peace education is a crucial process to institutionalize peace and help with its settlement.

That is why each government should be responsible for promoting the institutionalization of peace by implementing a system to effectively implement peace education.

The first part of the conference presented the direction in which the education sector should move forward to promote the institutionalization of peace.
