Why drink tea?

Tea is a beverage made from the Camellia sinesis plant. Tea is the world’s most consumed drink, after water. It is believed that tea originated in northeast India, north Myanmar and southwest China, but the exact place where the plant first grew is not known. Tea has been with us for a long time. There is evidence that tea was consumed in China 5,000 years ago.

Tea production and processing constitutes a main source of livelihoods for millions of families in developing countries and is the main means of subsistence for millions of poor families, who live in a number of least developed countries.

The tea industry is a main source of income and export revenues for some of the poorest countries and, as a labour-intensive sector, provides jobs, especially in remote and economically disadvantaged areas. Tea can play a significant role in rural development, poverty reduction and food security in developing countries, being one of the most important cash crops.

Tea consumption can bring health benefits and wellness due to the beverage's anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and weight loss effects. It also has cultural significance in many societies.

On February 25, 2023 HWPL (Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light)’s International Law Sector hosted its first segment in the Human Rights Seminar Series focusing on “Community Revitalization: Addressing the Different Forms of Conflict and their Resolution.”

This seminar was held following human rights interviews conducted in 2022 with different government officials and non-profit leaders who shared a common concern of community violence and lack of well-being throughout neighborhoods. Through the seminar, experts addressed the concerns of conflict among youth, domestic violence, offender rehabilitation, and PTSD/trauma.

Four speakers shared about their experience and expertise regarding the topic including Ms. Norma Barnes, Ms. Letitia Delan, Ms. Jameelah Ferrell, and Dr. Denella Ausborn. They each gave a brief speech about their topic area, the role their organization holds in resolving it, and what the community needs to be aware of regarding conflict resolution.

World Press Freedom Day

HWPL Discuss solutions for improving the safety and working conditions of journalists

This year's celebration of the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day is a call to define press freedom, as well as independent, pluralistic, and diverse media, as a necessary condition for the enjoyment of all other human rights

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day, 158 people gathered to commemorate this important date. HWPL in collaboration with the Permanent Delegation of Suriname to UNESCO and the National Commission of the Democratic Republic of Congo for UNESCO organized a webinar to highlight the need for press freedom in today’s society.

This event aimed to propose solutions for improving the safety and working conditions of journalists with the cooperation between civil society, private sectors, and governments. For this, journalists, delegations to UNESCO, former ministers, and representatives of civil society were present.

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed May 3 as World Press Freedom Day. This proclamation marked the beginning of substantial progress for press freedom and freedom of expression around the world, with the proliferation of independent media in many countries and the rise of digital technologies allowing for the free flow of information online.

This year’s celebration of the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day is a call to define press freedom, as well as independent, pluralistic, and diverse media, as a necessary condition for the enjoyment of all other human rights. This is because unreliable information that has caused racism and hatred has widely spread through the media during the global pandemic.

This commemoration was opened with congratulatory speeches from the co-host countries’ delegations. The media-related workers from Congo, Mali, and the Czech Republic gave topic presentations on the protection of press freedom and the protection of human rights through it and the discussions were followed among presenters and participants.

World Bee Day 20 May

We all depend on the survival of bees

Bees and other pollinators, such as butterflies, bats and hummingbirds, are increasingly under threat from human activities.

Pollination is, however, a fundamental process for the survival of our ecosystems. Nearly 90% of the world’s wild flowering plant species depend, entirely, or at least in part, on animal pollination, along with more than 75% of the world’s food crops and 35% of global agricultural land. Not only do pollinators contribute directly to food security, but they are key to conserving biodiversity.

To raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development, the UN designated 20 May as World Bee Day.

The goal is to strengthen measures aimed at protecting bees and other pollinators, which would significantly contribute to solving problems related to the global food supply and eliminate hunger in developing countries.

We all depend on pollinators and it is, therefore, crucial to monitor their decline and halt the loss of biodiversity.

International Day of Families 15 May

In late 2022, the world’s population has reached eight billion people. Characterised by the United Nations Secretary-General as a ‘milestone in human development’ this landmark event illustrates major advancements in health extending human lifespans. Population growth is to continue albeit at a decreasing rate. It is projected to reach 9.8 billion in 2050 and 11.2 in 2100 rising concerns about the prospects of sustainable urbanization and management of climate change.

Demographic change is one of the most important megatrends impacting our world and the life and well-being of families worldwide. Demographic trends are mostly shaped by fertility and mortality patterns. Declining fertility rates result in benefits for families as they are more able to invest in their children’s health and education which in turns helps with poverty reduction and better socio-economic development.

Research indicates that decreasing fertility also increases women’s labour participation. On the other hand, fertility declines results in smaller families which are less likely to cope with care and other household obligations. As such in time of unemployment or illness, families have fewer members to rely on. Moreover, low fertility rates may undermine labour forces and social structures triggering drastic responses with hard to predict consequences for issues raging from social security to gender equality.
