International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness | 5 March

Did you know?

Did you know that in 2021, global military spending reached $2.1 trillion? 12,700 nuclear weapons remain an existential threat to humanity today. 26,000 people can be treated for malaria for the price of 1 battle tank. Here are some outreach materials.

The International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness seeks to promote better awareness and understanding of disarmament issues among the public, especially young people.

Since the founding of the United Nations, the goals of multilateral disarmament and arms limitation have been central to the Organization’s efforts to maintain international peace and security.

Weapons of mass destruction, in particular nuclear weapons, continue to be of primary concern, owing to their destructive power and the threat that they pose to humanity. The excessive accumulation in conventional weapons and the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons jeopardizes international peace and security and sustainable development, while the use of explosive weapons in populated areas is seriously endangering civilians. New and emerging weapon technologies, such as autonomous weapons, pose a challenge to global security and have received increased attention from the international community in recent years.

Observed on 5 March, the International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness plays a role in deepening the global public’s understanding about how disarmament efforts contribute to enhancing peace and security, preventing and ending armed conflicts, and curbing human suffering caused by weapons.

DPCW_1038 : Religious Peace Network

A religious peace network is an attempt to build a common front for the harmony and peace of religious leaders around the world. At the Religious Peace Network seminar, we will take a look at the situation of religious peace in a particular country or region. If there is a successful case of religious peace, we will share it and learn from each other. On the contrary, if there are large and small religious conflicts, we would like to share this situation as well, and send a message of religious harmony through dialogue. Seminars within the Religious Peace Network can be used to deliver specific messages of peace that are linked to the real situation of that region.

Pakistan, which was originally a united country with India, gained independence from England in 1947, and became its own sovereign country, predominantly for religious reasons. Since Pakistan is an Islamic republic, the human rights violations of minority religious people by Muslims, who occupy the absolute majority, have often been witnessed and are emerging as a social issue.

Although Pakistan is an Islamic republic, not only Muslims but also Christians, Hindus, and Sikhs are living in it, forming communities. The heads of each religious community interact with each other and communicate based on understanding and respect. However, ordinary citizens have not yet reached the level of consciousness that they must respect and understand each other.

At the Religious Peace Network 2022 Pakistan event, high-level figures from the Muslim, Christian, and Sikh communities met and had a conversation on the topic of “How to Promote Peaceful Interfaith Dialogue in Pakistan.” Dr. Shahbaz Manj, the head of the Department of Islamic studies at the Lahore University of Education, Pakistan; Tahir Naveed Chaudhary, a lawyer and president of the Pakistan Minority Association (PMA); Dr. Kalyan Singh Kalyan, Professor of Government College University, Lahore; and an audience of 70 members from Pakistan and South Korea also joined the event.

Dr. Shahbaz Manj, who serves as the head of the Department of Islamic studies at the Lahore University of Education said, “Pakistan came into being on the basis of the ideology of Islamic teachings but it does not mean that Pakistan is only for Muslims,” and he also said that they should be respected.

“I know that HWPL continues to do great peace work, such as the case of peace in Mindanao, Philippines,” said Tahir Naveed Chaudhary, the president of the Pakistan Minority Association (PMA). “I think because HWPL has a solid document like the DPCW, they can continue to do great peace works. Following this document is the way to create a culture of peace in Pakistan,” said Mr. Chaudhary.

HWPL emphasized that “A culture of dialogue is needed to create a peaceful atmosphere among religions, and free and respectful dialogue between various religious communities will guarantee Pakistani society ranks with other developed countries in sociocultural aspects,” and all speakers agreed with it.

The three speakers agreed that interreligious dialogue in Pakistan should be much more active than it is now. In 2023, we decided to promote interreligious dialogue in Pakistan with more people.

Religious Peace Network 2022 Albania

The Balkan Peninsula, where Albania is located, is a place called the powder keg of Europe. Historically, it is a region where the East and the West have met and many peoples, cultures, and religions have been intertwined and war has never ceased. Ethnic and religious conflicts continue to this day. However, despite its location in the Balkans, Albania has maintained interreligious peace.

At the “Religious Peace Network” event, high-level figures from the Albanian religious circle were invited to share the secret. Seventy-five audience members from Albania, Croatia, Portugal, USA, and more participated in the event.

Dr. Genti Kruja, Secretary General of the Interreligious Council of Albania (IRCA) said, “In many urbanized societies, interfaith conflicts are a major problem in many phases such as, social and political, religious and psycho-cultural. The Albanian religious tolerance that has been built over the centuries must be conserved and maintained in the future inside the people’s inherited mentality.”

He also gave concrete examples of how five religions (Catholicism, Orthodox, Judaism, Sunni Islam, and Bektashi Islam) have historically created a culture of peace in Albania. Audiences were greatly surprised to learn that during the Nazi occupation, people of other religions helped the Jews, and it made Albania become the only country with a larger Jewish population than before the outbreak of World War II.

Luigi Mila, Head of Justice and Peace Commission of Europe said, “The strengthening of relations should come naturally through contribution, cooperation, and mutual respect,” and deeply sympathized with the purpose of HWPL, which emphasizes the value of interreligious dialogue. Arben Sulejmani, Head of Bektashi Community in North Macedonia said, “Albania had a difficult time under Communism, but we rebuilt our country through religious harmony, peace, and national unity. We always help our neighbors and do the best we can for them.”

Unlike other countries with a mix of Croatian, Bosnian, and Serb populations, Albania has a relatively high proportion of ethnic Albanians. Also, Muslims account for the majority. Therefore, Albania’s case may be so unique that it cannot be applied to other Balkan countries. However, the culture of tolerance and dialogue between religions does not have to be determined according to specific conditions but has an absolute value that precedes all situations and conditions. All participants at the Religious Peace Network 2022 Albania event also agreed with it.

In 2023, Religious Peace Network seminars will be hosted in other Balkan countries. At this time, the three presenters decided to actively cooperate to help bring a culture of religious peace to the Balkan region.

DPCW_1038 : Nine years after the peace agreement in Mindanao

After more than three years of pandemic, HWPL Chairman Man Hee Lee and the peace delegate finally left for their 32nd peace tour to the Philippines! It is nine years after the Mindanao Peace Agreement was signed on January 24th, 2014. How have the Philippines and Mindanao changed?

In the Philippines alone, currently, there are 11 peace monuments erected and this time it was built in Manila. Various government agencies and organizations in each sector passed a resolution to establish Peace Day as a national holiday on every January 24th. In Cotabato City in Mindanao, a peace concert was held for the first time in about 50 years since the conflict broke out.

Mindanao is surprisingly moving fast forward to achieving peace. We have  briefly gathered its peace moments according to the HWPL peace delegate’s journey.

Peace Monument Established in Manila to Support Sustainable Peace

MANILA- On January 24, 2023, a peace monument was unveiled at Plaza Asuncion in Malate in support for cessation of war and adherence to peace. It is the first of its kind to be established at the national capital as well as the regional center of the National Capital Region.

The project was spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Manila Metro (RCMM), in collaboration with HWPL. The landmark, the 11th peace monument in the Philippines, also serves as an expression of support for the “Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War” (DPCW), drafted by international experts in law to advocate peacebuilding efforts by citizens and governments. The DPCW supports the President’s Executive Order No. 70, institutionalizing the whole-of-nation approach to attaining inclusive and sustainable peace.

A resolution to support DPCW was signed and adopted by the City Council of Manila and its regular session on December 20, 2022. The turn-over of this document was held right before the peace monument was unveiled. At the unveiling ceremony Lee Man-hee, Chairman of HWPL said, “As I have toured the world 32 times and talked about the cessation of war as we have to leave a land of peace as a legacy for the future generation, and this country, the Philippines, is showing this. Let’s do everything we can to do the work of peace.”

PASAY CITY- The 1st National Peace Convention was held on January 25, 2023 with the theme, “Peace Builds One Nation, One Future: Peace is Here” attended by over 1,500 peace advocates to build a holistic roadmap towards the attainment of national unity through peace in consonance with the Marcos Administration’s agenda.

The convention commenced with the first Plenary Session followed by parallel sessions in the afternoon. The parallel sessions were conducted separately for five sector groups- lawmakers and non-government organizations, academe and youth, religious and ethnic groups, women, and media.

Lee Man-hee, Chairman of HWPL said, “Peacebuilding in Mindanao after conflict is becoming known worldwide. This is the case of transforming death into life for peace. Starting with Mindanao and the Philippines, when we unite in love, peace will come to our world. For this reason, everyone in the Philippines has to become one and work together as messengers of peace.”

HWPL World Interfaith Joint Prayer Conference

Prayer Conference for Peace in Russia & Ukraine

On November 5th, 2022, the “HWPL World Interfaith Joint Prayer Conference: Prayer Conference for Peace in Russia & Ukraine” was held online over two sessions at 6 AM and 1 PM (UTC). 493 people of religion from around the world, including 185 religious leaders, graced the event with their presence.

While the world bears witness to yet another terrible war due to the prolonged Russia-Ukraine war, HWPL has consistently held relay prayer meetings for peace since April 2022 to console the victims of war, to urge for the end of wars, and for peaceful coexistence.

Participants were first shown an opening video which captured the horrors of war and the pain of the victims in Russia and Ukraine. In the video, HWPL Chairman, Mr. Man-hee Lee, gave a message of peace to remind all of us why wars must be stopped and of our roles as citizens of the world, saying, “What we are responsible for, and what we must do in this era, is peace. We must ensure that countless young people are not killed again. If you don’t have power (or strength), let’s ask the heavens or borrow the power of the heavens for help.”

In particular, Russian religious leaders and Ukrainian religious leaders attended the prayer conference and gave speeches to urge for the end of wars and for peace, and in so doing, reminded us of what the role of religious leaders should be in times of war.

A *Russian Christian religious leader, who attended the prayer meeting despite the risks to his well-being, spoke out against the injustices of the war based on his faith and conscience as a person of religion. In his speech, he called for an end to the war and shared that: “I call out my voice for peace and reconciliation between Russia and Ukraine at this time. Citizens of both countries must speak out that this military war should be stopped. God wants us to live in peace.” (*Personal information of the speaker is withheld due to security concerns.)

This was followed by a speech by a Ukrainian religious leader, Vraja Hari Prabhu, Vice President of ISKCON in Ukraine and Moldova. Vraja Hari Prabhu stressed that we should not be wasting our lives in war and strife but remember that we are all brothers and sisters in this global community. In his speech, he said: “This is in direct violation of the dharma or religion that we see now in this war. And the saddest thing is that in the interval between life and death, we fight for what we did not bring with us and for what we will not take with us. Therefore, we should not waste time on wars and quarrels. We should serve the Lord and remember that we are all brothers and sisters.”

After the speeches, leaders of various denominations came out to console the victims for their sacrifices caused by the war, emphasizing that war and conflict were never God’s will, and wishing for a world of peace to come as soon as possible. Based on the universal message of peace and love in the sacred religious texts, the religious leaders emphasized that conflict and discord originate from the greed and desires of Man. It is the rightful duty of Man to repent and turn back to living in harmony and peace with each other, as taught by the Creator.

INTERNATIONAL DAY : Global Tourism Resilience Day 17 February

Resilient tourism

For many developing countries, including the least developed countries, small island developing states, countries in Africa and middle-income countries, tourism is a major source of income, foreign currency earnings, tax revenue and employment. Because tourism connects people with nature, sustainable tourism has the unique ability to spur environmental responsibility and conservation.

Sustainable tourism, including ecotourism, is a cross-cutting activity that can contribute to the three dimensions of sustainable development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by fostering economic growth, alleviating poverty, creating full and productive employment and decent work for all.

It can also play a role in accelerating the change to more sustainable consumption and production patterns and promoting the sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources, promoting local culture, improving the quality of life and the economic empowerment of women and young people, indigenous peoples and local communities and promoting rural development and better living conditions for rural populations, including small-holder and family farmers.

The use of sustainable and resilient tourism as a tool to foster sustained and inclusive economic growth, social development and financial inclusion, enables the formalization of the informal sector, the promotion of domestic resource mobilization and environmental protection and the eradication of poverty and hunger, including the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and natural resources and the promotion of investment and entrepreneurship in sustainable tourism.

Global Tourism Resilience Day (17 February), proclaimed by the General Assembly in resolution A/RES/77/269, aims to emphasize the need to foster resilient tourism development to deal with shocks, taking into account the vulnerability of the tourism sector to emergencies. It is also a call for action for Member States to develop national strategies for rehabilitation after disruptions, including through private-public cooperation and the diversification of activities and products.
