DPCW_1038 : The Need for Peace for Sustainable Social Development

HWPL held a human rights webinar on December 17th under the theme, “The Need for Peace for Sustainable Social Development.” About 26 people including the head of a youth NGO in Sierra Leone, journalists, religious leaders, and more attended this webinar to discuss practical ways to achieve peace in Sierra Leone’s current national reality.

📍

Sierra Leone’s population has a high proportion of youths. In the midst of this, political polarization according to race and region led to the critical election activities of each party which have spread to bloody violence among young people. This resulted in the sacrifices of many young people’s lives. Also, young people are living in conflict and anxiety taking harmful drugs due to unemployment and other economic problems, and engaging in violence and criminal acts that undermine the nation’s safety.

Experts from various fields who attended this webinar pointed out that taking this unstable reality for granted is a problem in the present society and explained that peace education is needed to improve such problems. In order for the nation and community to develop, peace must be achieved from one’s home first because it must be enforced that peace is an essential fundamental right that everyone must deserve.

🔹

For this event, many people including Colonel Muana Brima Massaquoi, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Defence and National Security, Ms. Yvonne Denise Aki-Sawyer, the Mayor of the City of Freetown, H.E. Samuel Sam-Sumana, the Former Vice President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, and more have sent congratulatory messages.

🔸

Colonel Muana Brima Massaquoi, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Defence and National Security, said, “I am very happy and interested to see this event going on because it was a space where many different opinions were freely presented and everyone was very considerate of each other. The ultimate purpose of this work is to promote sustainable peace through a foundation of justice and equality. It is our responsibility to create a culture of peace to guarantee human rights.”

World Radio Day 13 February

 "

On this World Day we celebrate radio’s power to nurture and build peace.

"

Radio in Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding

Radio is an important player and an essential part of maintenance and transition to peace. Professional radio addresses both the root causes and triggers of conflict, before they potentially explode into violence. It offers an alternative methodology of conflict prevention by clarifying frustrations, or clashes of interest, clearing misunderstandings, and identifying issues of distrust. This can help counter hate, the desire for revenge, or the will to take up arms.

Radio programmers’ varied collaborative techniques also reinforce a culture of dialogue by means of participatory programmes and formats, such as calls-in, talk shows, listeners’ fora, etc., and so give opportunities to discuss - on air and democratically - latent issues, including disagreements.

Professional independent radio, thus, strengthens democracy and provides the foundation for sustainable peace.

International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism as and when Conducive to Terrorism, 12 February

Violent extremism is an affront to the purposes and principles of the United Nations. It undermines peace and security, human rights and sustainable development. No country or region is immune from its impacts.

Violent extremism is a diverse phenomenon, without clear definition. It is neither new nor exclusive to any region, nationality or system of belief. Nevertheless, in recent years, terrorist groups such as Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Al-Qaida and Boko Haram have shaped our image of violent extremism and the debate on how to address this threat.

These groups’ message of intolerance religious, cultural, social has had drastic consequences for many regions of the world. Holding territory and using social media for real-time communication of their atrocious crimes, they seek to challenge our shared values of peace, justice and human dignity.

The spread of violent extremism has further aggravated an already unprecedented humanitarian crisis which surpasses the boundaries of any one region. Millions of people have fled the territory controlled by terrorist and violent extremist groups. Migratory flows have increased both away, from, and towards the conflict zones - involving those seeking safety and those lured into the conflict as foreign terrorist fighters, further destabilizing the regions concerned.

Nothing can justify violent extremism but we must also acknowledge that it does not arise in a vacuum. Narratives of grievance, actual or perceived injustice, promised empowerment and sweeping change become attractive where human rights are being violated, good governance is being ignored and aspirations are being crushed.

DPCW_1038 : Peace is Here

PASAY CITYThe 1st National Peace Convention was held on January 25, 2023 with the theme, “Peace Builds One Nation, One Future: Peace is Here”, attended by over 1,500 peace advocates to build a holistic roadmap towards the attainment of national unity through peace in consonance with the Marcos Administration’s agenda.

Dr. Ronald Adamat, Commissioner of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Founding Chairman of Volunteer Individuals for Peace (VIP), spearheaded the event.

“We want peace to reign in our country. We want peace to be the language everyone of us will speak and every Filipino and every foreigner will understand. Today, let’s declare peace as a pandemic. Infect people not to rest in peace but to live in peace,” said Dr. Adamat.

Dr. Adamat is the first Filipino recipient of the prestigious Mahatma MK Gandhi Prize for Non-Violent Peace awarded last year in recognition of his contributions to peace-building including the higher education

In attendance also is Chairman Lee Man-hee of Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), a 92-year old Korean war veteran.

“Peacebuilding in Mindanao after conflict is becoming known worldwide. This is the case of transforming death into life for peace. Starting with Mindanao and the Philippines, when we unite in love, peace will come to our world. For this reason, everyone in the Philippines has to become one and work together as messengers of peace,” said Chairman Lee.

The two peace advocates first met in 2017 during HWPL World Peace Summit held in South Korea. As an expression of their shared commitment to promoting peace, CHED and HWPL signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) in 2018 to integrate peace education in the higher education curricula.

The convention commenced with the first Plenary Session followed by parallel sessions in the afternoon. The parallel sessions were conducted separately for five sector groupslawmakers and non-government organizations, academe and youth, religious and ethnic groups, women, and media. Each session drafted a resolution which contained their solidarity with the organizers’ peace-building efforts.

The five resolutions were consolidated during the second Plenary Session to call for President Bongbong Marcos to proclaim January 24 as ‘National Peace Day’ or “Truce Day”.

The date January 24 was proposed in commemoration of a civilian-led peace agreement signed at General Santos City in 2014 to boost reconciliation among the local communities. It was proposed by Chairman Lee to mediate between the existing conflict in Mindanao at the time. The date was later declared as ‘HWPL Peace Day’ by then Maguindanao governor Toto Mangudadatu in 2015 and BARMM Chief Minister and MILF Chairman Ahod Ebrahim in 2016.

The organizers believe that the declaration of a National Peace Day shall be the mechanism by which every year, peace-related activities are observed and celebrated across the country.

DPCW_1038 : WARP Offices

The World Alliance of Religions’ Peace (WARP) Offices are where religious leaders of various faiths and disciplines gather regularly to discuss their scriptures.

The comparative scriptural discussions are a way for participants to foster deeper and more empathetic discussions and greater openness in thought-sharing on how to evoke religious harmony and collaboration. The main goal of the discussions and meetings is to find true peace amongst religions through finding trustworthiness in scriptures.

As of July 2022, there are 274 WARP offices in operation in 129 countries. By participating, the religious leaders are grasping a clear idea of the duty they need to fulfill, finding specific ways to realize peace, and trying to prevent religious conflicts from taking place.

WARP offices are actively contributing to building a peaceful world by resolving disputes that derive from religious misunderstanding and promoting a more in-depth understanding of the standards, teachings, and the notion of peace in each religious text.

International Day of Human Fraternity 4 February

The declaration “Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together” co-authored by His Holiness Pope Francis and His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed El Tayeb is a model for interfaith harmony and human solidarity. Let us all take inspiration and renew our commitment to stand together as one human family.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres

Human fraternity for peace and cooperation

We need perhaps more than ever before to recognize the valuable contribution of people of all religions, or beliefs, to humanity and the contribution that dialogue among all religious groups can make towards an improved awareness and understanding of the common values shared by all humankind.

We also need to underline the importance of raising awareness about different cultures and religions, or beliefs, and the promotion of tolerance, which involves societal acceptance and respect for religious and cultural diversity, including with regard to religious expression. Education, in particular at school, should contribute in a meaningful way to promoting tolerance and the elimination of discrimination based on religion or belief.

Furthermore, we must acknowledge that tolerance, pluralistic tradition, mutual respect and the diversity of religions and beliefs promote human fraternity. Thus, it is imperative that we encourage activities aimed at promoting interreligious and intercultural dialogue in order to enhance peace and social stability, respect for diversity and mutual respect and to create, at the global level, and also at the regional, national and local levels, an environment conducive to peace and mutual understanding.

Within that frame, the General-Assembly took note of all international, regional, national and local initiatives, as appropriate, as well as efforts by religious leaders, to promote interreligious and intercultural dialogue, and in this regard took note also of the meeting between Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmad al-Tayyib, on 4 February 2019 in Abu Dhabi, which resulted in the signing of the document entitled “Human fraternity for world peace and living together”.
