International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 17 October

Persons living in poverty experience many interrelated and mutually reinforcing deprivations that prevent them from realizing their rights and perpetuate their poverty, including:

 

dangerous work conditions

unsafe housing

lack of nutritious food

unequal access to justice

lack of political power

limited access to health care

 

 

2020 Theme: Acting together to achieve social and environmental justice for all

The theme for the Day this year addresses the challenge of achieving social and environmental justice for all. The growing recognition of the multi-dimensionality of poverty means that these two issues are inseparably intertwined, and that social justice cannot be fully realized without aggressively rectifying environmental injustices at the same time.

 

Whereas progress has been made in addressing income poverty, there has been less success in addressing the other important dimensions of poverty, including the rapidly growing impact of the environment, within a more holistic approach.

 

People living in extreme poverty, often through sheer necessity, are the first to act decisively within their communities in response to poverty, climate change and environmental challenges.

 

However, their efforts and experience often go unnoticed and unappreciated; their ability to contribute positively to solutions has been overlooked; they are not recognized as drivers of change, and their voices are not heard, especially in international bodies.

 

 

 

This must change.

The participation, knowledge, contributions and experience of people living in poverty and those left behind must be valued, respected and reflected in our efforts to build an equitable and sustainable world in which there is social and environmental justice for all.

DPCW_1038: Global citizens yearning for peace

 

Global citizens yearning for peace,

 

 

Greetings, I am Man Hee Lee, the chairman of Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL). This year, we had to wish for each other’s safety and peace amid the darkness cast over us by an unexpected pandemic.

 

The fear of the virus completely overturned our lives and continues to blind us from the moments of hope at times.

 

 

 Global citizens of peace,

 Although the reality we face today may seem like a long pitch dark tunnel, there is no need to be afraid if we have the light called “hope.” Even if it is a thin lining, the light will outshine the darkness as a profound hope.

 

That light of the world is you, as you work for peace by joining the efforts to build a peaceful world free of war to guarantee peace in the future.

 Your brave and sincere heart toward all mankind is breathing life into peace.

Surely,

the heart of all, who have worked hand in hand with HWPL for peace, will blossom into a flower called the culture of peace in different parts of the world.

 

Due to the rampant COVID-19,

we could not gather to meet in person at the HWPL World Peace Summit this month. However, this can serve as an opportunity for us to reflect upon the year that has passed from where we stand through various means, and also encourage and comfort each other. Furthermore, for the upcoming year of 2021, we will be striving to lay out a plan to realize peace by discussing and examining what we can do. These steps we take for peace, which will forever go down in history as the lasting light, will continue until we reach our goal.

 

Respected members of the family for peace,

Thousands of HWPL members have been making a practical contribution to resolving the pandemic by having several rounds of donating blood plasma. Let us hope together for the swift development of treatment and vaccine against COVID-19 and wish together for the good health and safety of those who have been taking part in the endeavors for peace.

 

We have the answer to peace, and we are not alone, as we have the two wings of the International Peace Youth Group (IPYG) and the International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG) collaborating with us for our shared goal. Furthermore, when every individual of our worldwide coalition for peace become one, what we have been hoping for will become a reality.

 

Let us pass down a world of peace as a lasting legacy to the generations to come.

International Day : World Post Day 9 October

 

The COVID-19 crisis has put pressure on international postal supply chains to an unprecedented degree. Cross-border exchanges decreased by 21% between 23 January - 14 May 2020, compared to the same period the previous year.

 

 

 

The first known postal document, found in Egypt, dates from 255 BC. But even before that time postal services existed on nearly every continent in the form of messengers serving kings and emperors.

 

 

The Penny Black was the world's first adhesive postage stamp used in a public postal system. It was first issued in Great Britain, on 1 May 1840, but was not valid for use until 6 May.

 

 

Since 1971, the UPU has encouraged young writers aged 9-15 to write letters on a given theme to win exciting prizes. The competition is an excellent way of making young people aware of the important role postal services play in our societies. Get involved!

Greetings,

I am Man Hee Lee, Chairman of Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL).

 

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my deepest gratitude to all people who work for world peace and cessation of war in collaboration with HWPL.

 

HWPL has seen remarkable progress in carrying out the three core peace projects:

Legislate Peace Campaign,

World Alliance of Religions’ Peace (WARP) offices, and

HWPL peace education.

 

 

 

Undoubtedly,  

the endorsement at the national level and the participation and support of civil societies helped to produce these results.

 

However, they would not have been possible without the cooperation and dedication of peace messengers who are working for peace understanding the importance of it.

We are the messengers of peace born in this era with the mission to build a peaceful world and to leave it as a legacy to future generations.

 

Let us fulfill this duty by putting in concerted efforts into the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) to be implemented as international law to achieve true peace across the globe.

 

Then, we will be able to leave a world of peace as a lasting legacy to our children.

 

This is a shared goal of humanity and the way to realize sustainable peace that mankind has been hoping for.

1996

 

Africa became the fourth nuclear-weapon-free zone (Pelindaba Treaty).

 

At the request of the General Assembly, the International Court of Justice provided an advisory opinion on the Legality of the Threat or Use of Nuclear Weapons.

 

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty opened for signature.

 

 

2000

At the 2000 NPT Review Conference, States parties adopted thirteen practical steps for systematic and progressive efforts for nuclear disarmament.

 

2006

 Central Asia became the fifth nuclear-weapon-free zone (Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia).

2008 

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced his five-point plan towards nuclear disarmament.

2010

At the 2010 NPT Review Conference, States parties adopted a 64-point action plan across all three pillars of the Treaty – nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy – and practical steps to implement the 1995 Resolution on the Middle East.

2013

The General Assembly held its first-ever high-level meeting on nuclear disarmament. The General Assembly, through its resolution 68/32, declared that 26 September will be the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

 

The General Assembly, pursuant to resolution 67/56, convenes an open-ended working group on taking forward multilateral nuclear disarmament negotiations.

2016

The General Assembly, pursuant to resolution 70/33, convenes a second open-ended working group on taking forward multilateral nuclear disarmament negotiations.

 

2017

 

On 7 July, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is adopted. It is the first multilateral legally binding instrument for nuclear disarmament to have been negotiated in 20 years.

2018

The Secretary-General launched “Securing Our Common Future: An Agenda for Disarmament.” The Agenda addresses the elimination of nuclear weapons in the framework of “disarmament to save humanity.”

 

2020 

Fiftieth Anniversary of the entry- into force of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

DPCW_1038 : International Day to Protect Education from Attack, 9 September

DO YOU KNOW?

 

 

 

More than 22,000 students, teachers, and academics were injured, killed, or harmed in attacks on education during armed conflict or insecurity over the past five years.

 

Between 2015 and 2019, 93 countries experienced at least one reported attack on education.
Students and educators were most frequently harmed by direct attacks in Afghanistan, Cameroon, and Palestine.

 

 

Armed forces, other state actors, and armed groups used schools and universities for military purposes in 34 countries between 2015 and 2019, including as bases, detention centers, and weapons stores.

 

 

 

 

 

 In the past five years, state armed forces or armed groups reportedly recruited students from schools in 17 countries.

Around the world, attacks on children continue unabated, as warring parties flout one of the most basic rules of war: the protection of children.

 

The protracted nature of conflicts today is affecting the futures of entire generations of children.

 

Without access to education, a generation of children living in conflict will grow up without the skills they need to contribute to their countries and economies, exacerbating the already desperate situation for millions of children and their families.

The solution

A child’s right to education cannot be safeguarded in conflict zones without education itself being protected. Education can be a life-saver.

 

Out of school,

 

children are easy targets of abuse, exploitation and recruitment by armed forces and groups.

 

School should provide a safe space where children can be protected from threats and crises.

 

It is also a critical step to breaking the cycle of crisis and reduces the likelihood of future conflicts.
