DPCW_1038 : Civilian peace agreement, determined voice of citizens

In General Santos on 24 January 2014, a civilian agreement was signed for the peace of Mindanao. The signing ceremony, hosted by HWPL and organized by the IWPG and the IPYG, was attended by over 300 residents including politicians, university professors, religious leaders, and students. Before the audience, Archbishop Emeritus Fernando Robles Capalla of Archdiocese of Davao and Governor Esmael G. Mangudadatu of Maguindanao signed the agreement as representatives to cooperate in ceasing the conflict and building peace.

With this agreement as a starting point, HWPL launched a peace movement to raise public awareness of peace not only in Mindanao but throughout the Philippines, based on the universal principles of mutual understanding, respect, and harmony. 

Also, civil society sectors such as education, religion, youth, and women are actively engaged in HWPL’s peace initiatives to remove the causes of conflict and strengthen the values of peaceful development.

 

The 24th of January was declared as HWPL Day, and a monument was established to commemorate the signing of the Mindanao Peace Agreement.

Davao City’s museum and public library are exhibiting HWPL’s peace activities. Students from elementary school to college are growing into messengers of peace through peace education, and on 25 May of every year, youth and women participate in peace walks. Moreover, religious leaders regularly convene at the World Alliance of Religions’ Peace Office to engage in interfaith discussions based on religious texts.

The “Legislate Peace” (LP) project is a global initiative to support and advocate for the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) and its implementation at the international level.

The LP project started off as the Sign Your Support campaign, which was launched to promote the value of the DPCW as a solution for achieving global peace and urge different sectors of society to support this declaration. The campaign expanded into various forms of peace events and activities tailored to regions around the world, including seminars, forums, peace walks, and education.

 

The LP project offers each individual in the global community the opportunity to become the agent for peace. Through a wide array of activities, global citizens are able to practice “Spreading a culture of peace,” Article 10 of the DPCW, in their respective locations. Anyone who wants peace can participate in leaving a legacy of peace for future generations through the LP project.

HWPL Unveiling Ceremony of Peace Monument

On October 10, 2023 “HWPL Unveiling Ceremony of Peace Monument” co-hosted by HWPL Global Branch 10 and Korean Buddhism was held in Asan, Manjusa (Buddhist temple) in the Republic of Korea. This event was held to wish for peace and to commemorate practices and contributions of peace activities.

 

For the first time in Korea, a monument was erected for building peace, making this a very meaningful event.

 

The unveiling ceremony of the peace monument was performed during the first session – before the Dharma ceremony – on the occasion of the 52nd first Tathagata Ilvung Mundo day. There were 175 people in attendance including the monks of the Ilvung Mundo Central Committee and figures from religious groups and society, wishing for the alliance of religions and peace in the world.

In addition, he gave congratulatory remarks saying, “I am pleased to host this meaningful event, the unveiling ceremony of the No. 1 peace monument, as an HWPL ambassador and will continue to erect HWPL peace monuments in my life from now on.”

On this peace monument, there is a carved message, “Let us become peace messengers who fulfill peace, freedom, unification, the cessation of global war, world peace restoration, and peaceful re-unification,” which contains the heart of wishes for peace of HWPL and Korean Buddhism. Through this unveiling ceremony, everyone who loves peace can become a peace messenger, and the fact that the whole world could be closer to peace through peace activities is confirmed.

 

International Day of Epidemic Preparedness, 27 December

As exemplified by the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic major infectious diseases and epidemics have devastating impacts on human lives, wreaking havoc on long-term social and economic development. Global health crises threaten to overwhelm already overstretched health systems, disrupt global supply chains and cause disproportionate devastation of the livelihoods of people, including women and children, and the economies of the poorest and most vulnerable countries.

 

There is an urgent need to have resilient and robust health systems, reaching those who are vulnerable or in vulnerable situations.

In the event of the absence of international attention, future epidemics could surpass previous outbreaks in terms of intensity and gravity. There is great need of raising awareness, the exchange of information, scientific knowledge and best practices, quality education, and advocacy programmes on epidemics at the local, national, regional and global levels as effective measures to prevent and respond to epidemics.

 

It is important to strengthen epidemic prevention by applying lessons learned on epidemic management and how to prevent the stoppage of basic services, and to raise the level of preparedness in order to have the earliest and most adequate response to any epidemic that may arise, and recognizing also the value of an integrated One Health approach that fosters integration of human health, animal health and plant health, as well as environmental and other relevant sectors.

 

International cooperation and multilateralism play an important role in the response to epidemics. We need to stress the significance of partnership and solidarity among every individual, community and State, and regional and international organizations, in all stages of epidemic management, as well as the importance of considering a gender perspective in this regard.

 

The United Nations system, in particular the World Health Organization, plays a pivotal role in coordinating responses to epidemics, in accordance with its mandate, and in supporting national, regional and international efforts to prevent, mitigate and address the impacts of infectious diseases and epidemics in accordance with the goal of advancing the 2030 Agenda.

 

We need to recognize the primary role and responsibility of Governments and the indispensable contribution of relevant stakeholders in tackling global health challenges, especially women, who make up the majority of the world’s health workers.

UN member states commit to ensure inclusive, equal and non-discriminatory participation, with special attention to those, who are vulnerable or in vulnerable situations with the highest chance of epidemic infection.

 

The UN General Assembly invites all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system and other global, regional and subregional organizations, the private sector and civil society, including non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, individuals and other relevant stakeholders to observe the International Day of Epidemic Preparedness annually in an appropriate manner and in accordance with national contexts and priorities, through education and awareness-raising activities, in order to highlight the importance of the prevention of, preparedness for and partnership against epidemics.

HWPL Peace Educator Ceremony

From August 22nd to October 13th, the HWPL Peace Educator Training took place at the Asphodel Public School in Kathmandu, Nepal. A total of 14 current teachers participated, and on the final day, October 13th, the Peace Educator Ceremony was held.

 

The connection between Asphodel Public School and HWPL Peace Education began in 2021. Biva Kalika Malla Shrestha, the Vice Principal of Asphodel School and its founder, was introduced to HWPL Peace Education and was fascinated by the content. After learning Peace Educator training multiple times, she initiated the HWPL Peace Educator Training for the teachers at Asphodel Public School at her earnest request.

14 teachers learned Peace Educator training in eight sessions, covering all 12 subjects of peace education. Despite the school’s busy schedule, the dedicated teachers managed to find time to participate sincerely, and the school’s principal and vice principal facilitated the opportunity within the school’s demanding schedule. The passion of the teachers for peace education was even featured in a local newspaper in the Pokhara region of Nepal.

Initially, the teachers were uncertain about what they could do for peace when they first started Peace Educator training. However, upon completing the education, they found definite answers within the peace curriculum and realized the value and importance of being Peace Educators. They expressed joy and pride in becoming Peace Educators.

 

 

 

A Running Festival took place in Auckland, New Zealand

On October 15th, The Great South Road Running Festival, a peace marathon, was held in Auckland, New Zealand. The event was organized by the Be a Wolf Foundation and the New Zealand branch of International Peace Youth Group (IPYG). It was established to unite the local community and contribute to society through fundraising.

The marathon began from Auckland’s Allenby Park and consisted of a total of four courses: a 5km, 10km, 22km, and 70km run throughout Auckland, with participants from diverse backgrounds.

 

This was the second event of the Youth Engagement &Peacebuilding Working Group (YEPW) prepared jointly by the Auckland-based charity Be a Wolf Foundation and the IPYG New Zealand branch. In the first YEPW event in April this year, IPYG New Zealand volunteers held a “Dream Letter” to support children’s dreams and hopes through a Hoodie Drop.

 

What was noteworthy about this event were the volunteers who willingly devoted themselves to developing a culture of peace in the local community. Many residents who attended contributed to the process, from preparing and running the event to finishing it.

 

Nayzel Sushil (Founder, Be a Wolf Foundation) said “Honestly, IPYG did so good and I wouldn’t have been able to do anything without volunteers. They are the MVP (most valuable people). It goes to show that the little support can mean so much for the runners which I found to be the most efficient.”

 

Dicken Yiu (General Director, IPYG, New Zealand Branch) said “It was a successful event where participants all enjoyed the run and were able to give back to the community. IPYG volunteers were honored to be of support and for next year we would love to see a bigger event where more families and youth can join in to support for the cause of community unity and helping individuals and families in need.”

It is time to get progress towards health for all back on track.

The United Nations High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage, held on 21 September 2023, reaffirmed that healthy people are the foundation of healthy societies and economies, and that UHC is central to achieving all of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Half of the world’s population does not have access to essential health services.

An estimated 2 billion people face financial hardship due to out-of-pocket health expenses, including 344 million people living in extreme poverty.

Since the launch of the SDGs in 2015 – even before the COVID-19 pandemic – the expansion of health service coverage had stalled and financial protection had deteriorated.

The pandemic has set countries further back in their journey towards universal health coverage. It has also showed why UHC is so important.
